It was fifty years ago today that the Hula Hoop was born, and although I was not around then, apparently it was the hottest thing going -- like, say, the iPhone today -- for several years. I do have some memories of playing with the things in the sixties, but it seemed girls were much better at the keep-it-going hip sway. I don't know if you can still buy the Wham-O hula hoops, but the concept still lives on. Here's a photo I took at the How Weird Street Faire last month of some wild tricked-out hoops. Some equally crazy-color dressed vagabonds and their cute cat (who despite the appearance, is not pulling the cart) were selling at the faire.No, I did not buy or even try any of these hoops!
