The Dangerous Book For Boys

Boys will be dangerousIt's not really nice to read a book you've purchased as a gift for someone else, but "boys will be boys." And in that spirit, I just finished reading this new book before wrapping it up to give to Neville, my ten year old pen pal. Neville is finishing the fifth grade, and we've been exchanging letters in a composition book since last fall. The finale of this San Francisco Unified School District program is a party where the kids meet their grownup pen pals.

The Dangerous Book For Boys is a refreshingly non-PC guide to all sorts of things boys should know, but rarely get exposure to in these sedentary, electronic-toy overstimulating days. What's wrong with getting getting some scrapes and bruises? What's wrong with a little bit of risk? What's wrong with knowing more about bugs, constellations, poker, go-carts, knots, water bombs, and skinning a rabbit? This book has chapters covering these and many, many more facts, instructions, advice, and adventure stories; suited to "recapture Sunday afternoons and long summer days." Check out this "trailer" for the book:

Sorry, girls, but this book is for the boys. But not to worry. One chapter is named "Girls" and closes with this bit of wisdom: "They think and act rather differently to you, but without them, life would be one long football locker room. Treat them with respect."

I hope Neville enjoys The Dangerous Book For Boys as much as this big boy did!

Free thinker, am glad, that you are involved with a project such as this, there are ton's of kids that need an adult other than a parent to interact with. Kudos There are lots of boys who's fathers either never did any of these things, so they can not share or they are absent from the child's life and never share. was raised by a single mom, and think that my brothers missed a lot of stuff. So when my husband and son, did some of the darndest things it just boggled my mind, but treasure hunting for junk, was one of their favorite pastimes. And there is all kinds of stuff out there most of it in my neck of the woods, ended up in son's bedroom. Going to have to find this book, there are a couple of 10-12 year olds, that have birthdays coming up. Thanks for sharing. pat

LOL, I have often thought of reading a book before giving it to someone, but have yet to actually try it.

Very cool!!! My boy gets into quite a bit of boy stuff like this already, but he loves reading and would probably get a lot more ideas from this book.

Hey, you did the right thing. Someone has to read it first to see whether it is truly appropriate for Neville, wouldn-t you say? See? You were simply being considerate and putting Neville's welfare before yours... I applaud you amigo mio!

And being a girl, the book holds little if any appeal to me, I'm afraid, but I guess that's a good sign! I am sure he will love it FO SHO!

Besos amigo mio!

Pat ~ You're right. Looking back on my childhood, I had some special adults in my life (aside from the 'rents) who influenced me greatly. It takes a village ...

MyUtopia ~ As long as the book remains in mint condition, who's the wiser?

Aye ~ Sounds like your boy is a good candidate for The Dangerous Book For Boys. Get it for him and read it with him!

Boo ~ He'll be glad you did!

Rashbre ~ We all know that Girls Just Wanna Have Fun too!

Miz B ~ Er ... yes, yes, I had to screen the book for the boy; that's why I read it first. Yeah, that's the ticket!

¡Vaya con Libros!
