Cable Car Chase

Up and down, up and down ...Where else but in San Francisco could there be a race like the Cable Car Chase? Most of the course of this 5.67 mile race follows the cable car route. Cable cars have a top speed of 9.5 miles per hour, so it's easy to keep ahead of the cars. Easy, except for the killer hills, which can be challenging, as you can see in these photos.

Who's your daddy, cable cars?

My pace beat your pace!

Reunion Reception

Tonight I meet up with dozens of old friends from my teenage years, growing up in New York City. Despite us all being "military brats" who were accustomed to relocating every few years, most of my fellow "brats" settled in the East, not too far from the Big Apple.

We had a fantastic reunion at a reception hall in the Hotel Pennsylvania (33rd Street at 7th Avenue, right across from Madison Square Garden), drinking, eating, laughing, and reconnecting after so many years.

Tomorrow we take a trip back to the unique place we lived -- a secure little island off the southern tip of Manhattan.

Here are a few photos of me with some old friends. (I was on the other side of a camera most of the night!) The first photo is former roller skating queen Lynn and me; the second photo is me and former Leif Garrett lookalike Steve; the third photo is me and Dawn, still the party girl; the fourth photo is me and Dawn (and a couple other pals) -- from 1977. Funny how Dawn and I pose for the camera in the same wrist-on-the-shoulder way almost 30 years later!

Empire State Building

Start spreading the news, I'm posting again today, I want to be part of it, FreeThought, FreeThought! These vagabond shoes were starting to stray ... but after a month of vacation and a blog-break, FreeThinker is back. This is a warm-up and a catch-up post with some photos from the top o' the Empire State Building. Even though this post is composed on September 5, the post date of August 3 shall reflect the event/photo date. Yes, there's some catchin' up to do, so stick around!

The Big Apple

Yo!Dear Readers,

I'm vacationing in New York City and taking a little break from blogging. I'll definitely be back with more FreeThought by a FreeThinker very soon. Until then, come on in, kick off your shoes, stay awhile, smoke 'em if you got 'em, and read (or re-read) my posts and the comments. Don't forget to check out the archives!

Snakes On A Plane

Sit Back. Relax. Enjoy the fright.Heh heh ...

I left my copy of Entertainment Weekly, with the "Snakes On A Plane" cover, with the other magazines in the seatback.

Let's hope the next passenger does not have ophidiophobia. Or aviophobia. Or both.

I'm on my way to New York City for a fun weekend. Stay tuned!

Wayback Wednesday #20060802

The summer heatwave rages on. If you're reading this now, you're slaving over a hot computer, which is no relief from the heat. Wouldn't you rather be swimming right now? If a tub, a pool, or the Pacific Ocean is not available to you right now, just imagine joining me in the Aloha State.

Let's spin the big wheel and see where we land today ...

Two Thousand Three!

One of the many benefits to living on the California coast is the relative ease in visiting Hawaii. It's just a five hour flight from San Francisco. This Wayback Wednesday spotlights a couple of photos from June 21, 2003 at an isolated beach in Oahu. Yes, I had the 'fro grown out again at this time, but as these photos indicate, it's a bit compressed and straighter when wet. Here's a "beach boys" shot with friends Eric, Dixon, Bobby, and Casey.

The 'wave' never ends for these football players
A life ambition was achieved on this vacation. Those of you with straight hair take for granted that you can knock your head back and flip your hair back too. We curly haired folk just can't do this. But oh, how I've always wanted to, especially as a teenager when the hair flip was an affectation of "cool." Well, with my hair very long, and thoroughly soaked with Pacific Ocean water from submerged swimming, I surfaced, wet hair straight down over my face. Treading the water, I leaned my head forward, snapped my head back, and I did it! For the first time in my life, I experienced the hair flip!

This little piggy went to Waikiki ...
