Thanks, Coach Bastian!

On this day of thanks-giving, I would like to honor the man who inspired my lifelong love of running: Coach Barry Bastian of Port Richmond High School in Staten Island, New York City. If there was any clique I belonged to as a shy, pimple-faced teenager, it would probably be "Rocker." Rock music was my obsession, and did the bare minimum in school to pass. This included gym class. There was a moment, after a required lap around the track, when the P.E. teacher pulled me aside and said, "I've been watching you on the track, and you've got a natural talent for running. I'm the track coach, and I want you to try out for the track team." He was persuasive enough for me to commit to tryouts, which I did well enough at to be able to join the varsity track team. I was now a "Rocker" and a "Jock." After many, many practice runs back and forth over the Bayonne Bridge, and several track meets, I was hooked on running. I never won a race, but the determination and competition (and the "runner's high") gave me the confidence to be a more well-rounded and healthy person for life -- just like Coach Bastian promised me.

Using the Internet, I've been trying to "track" Coach Bastian down, with no luck so far. It seems he was fired from Port Richmond High School a few years ago by the New York City Department of Education for deviating from micromanaging city procedures. Coach Bastian is apparently challenging this in federal court, and the city is stalling. Until then, details about this controversy are hush-hush.

I know Coach Bastian would much prefer being at the track than being in a court. Someday, I hope be able to contact him and tell him how much his coaching has inspired me. I don't think I ever told him, "Thanks, Coach!"

Here's an assortment of photos of me at various runs over the last several years. This healthy lifelong hobby of mine may never have happened without Coach Bastian.

I so know that runner's high well! When I first moved to SF I got to know it well by running all over... the Presidio was a fave and I loved the challenging hills and the beauty all in one!

But then I busted my right knee... too much running (I did an hour a day) and nothing else to ensure even muscle development... and now, with all the chaos going on around me, I am trying, not too successfully right now, to get back into it, slowly but surely... I figure my daily 5:30 am yoga should take care of my knee and as long as I ease my way back into running I should be ok... any tips would be highly appreciated but hey, we can exchange quite a few once I make it back to the city, no?

As for my comment on the post below, dios mio, I did not mean to infer you go, for me, to check Amos Lee out when in the city... I was bemoaning the fact that I was not there but I meant check him out in general but to make it easier for you...

That is a link to a song of his I just love...

Speaking of lovin', that's how I feel about this post! Too bad you haven't tracked him down yet! Hey, maybe you should write his full name as a technorati type link in case he ever googles himself online... stranger things have happened!

Hope you have a good week amigo mio and enjoy that beautiful city for me!

PS- You are SO making me homesick with the fab pics... looking good!

What a wonderful story. You should find him and share this. People need to know what an impact they have on others.

Miz B ~ Isn't San Francisco the best place ever for running? I never get tired of seeing the hills, the water, the Golden Gate Bridge, the fog ...

Maybe you can get back into running soon? I'm not sure what tips to offer, as I'm not a running trainer like Coach Bastian. You, however, are a yoga trainer, but your blog has no "search" feature so I can't find your yoga-related posts anymore. I do remember that your description was exactly what I am interested in. I'm ready to sign up!

Hey, I like that Amos Lee clip! He reminds me of Ben Harper or James Taylor.

I'm following your text n' video adventures on your blog. Keep your eye on the (SF) prize!

Lee Ann ~ I'm still in good shape, so hopefully I'll keep making deposits in the "memory bank!"

VV ~ I hope to find Coach Bastian someday and thank him personally. I often think of him while running. He's on the other coast, which makes it harder to track him down. But someday, someday, there will be a "Mr. Holland's Opus" moment.

MyUtopia ~ It's nice to remember and honor those who influenced us. Let your dad and gramps know you're thankful, OK?

You have a new Blogger image: Books?

i think it would be really nice if he found out how grateful you are to him. if i were him and i found that post, i'd be really chuffed about it. one day i think i might track down and thank some (though not all!) of my teachers from school.

chuffed = pleased/flattered.

Hel Fire ~ Thanks for the definition. "Chuffed" is a good thing! Let me know if you encounter any ambiguous American colloquialisms -- I'm happy to translate, if I can.

YES! I can think of no better place for running than SF... such beauty and a kickass workout incorporated into the routine, courtesy of the hills...

As for the description of Ashtanga, here is the website of out now-defunct-and-oh-so-happily-so ex-business GAIA... the Ashtanga link there explains it all...

YAY on liking Amos Lee... yes, he has the same vibe... love it! Hope you have a good weekend! Live it up on my behalf! :-) Besos...

I'm more a walker than a runner (bad knees, which I'll gladly ruin with tennis but little else) but will grant that SF is a great place to tone your legs. I love your city.

Thanks for your good wishes!

Great story!
I hope you can find that coach too, that would mean a lot to him when he hears about how much of an inspiration he was to you!

I wish I were able to run, I wasn't very good at running. A mile would kill me. When I started my weight loss routine, I did try to run. For a while I was getting better. Unfortunately I can't run now because my left foot hurts from wearing my old sneakers for too long. hopefully when my foot gets better, I can try again.

I graduated Port Richmond 3 years ago, Bastian was my health teacher. I heard he was fired because he was inappropriate with a student. Not sure what ended up happening. On the Port Richmond High School website you can e-mail him though.
