The Bridge

The BridgeThis is a view of the Golden Gate Bridge from my main running trail. I snapped it while standing on the exact spot that was used by a filmmaker during the entire calendar year of 2004. During that year, a guy with a powerful telephoto lens attached to his tripod-mounted camera had it pointed at the bridge every time I ran by. A couple of times I stopped to stretch and chat with him. He told me he was on a project to "capture the majesty of the bridge throughout the seasons." How nice, I thought. San Francisco is full of lovably eccentric artist types.

In January 2005, he was no longer there. Now the full story is out: It seems this guy is a filmmaker named Eric Steel, and what he was really doing was filming suicide jumpers. About every two weeks, on average, somebody ends their life by leaping off the Golden Gate Bridge. This does not get much publicity because no one wants to glamorize it or inspire copycat suicides.

To this day, in my mind's eye, when I run by his filming spot, I see him there, intently looking through his lens, rain, fog, or shine. I regret never getting a photo of him at work on this then-secret project.

Steel admits he lied to people like me, and to Golden Gate National Recreation Area officials, in order to secure his permit and proceed with his project. In his defense, he had to lie to do this, or it might have attracted many more than the 23 suicides he caught on film. Moreover, he would have been denied his permit. But it's a done deal now, and after editing down 10,000 hours of footage to 93 minutes, his movie is ready. It's not a snuff film. "It's a film about the human spirit in crisis," he says, "intended to provoke discussion about suicide from the Golden Gate Bridge and mental illness in general."

"The Bridge" just opened at the Tribeca Film Festival. It's playing in limited release here in San Francisco. I don't think I will see it -- just seeing the trailer is enough for me.

I think the show looks interesting myself. Just haven't found time to go watch it.

That's a beautiful photo juxtaposed against a saddening thought of what transpires across such a majestic landscape.

What sort of camera did you snap the picture with?

Angie ~ "The Bridge" should be on cable and DVD soon. But perhaps it should be seen in the company of others?

Radio ~ Hey, welcome back from Jordan!

I guess this Golden Gate Bridge photo is pretty good after all, especially in the context of my post. The haze in the air gives it a melancholy look. The only signs of life are the two kayakers in the bay.

Then again, it's hard to take a BAD photo of the beautiful GGB!

I used my trusty lil' Canon SD500 for this shot. It's the only camera I own right now, so it does duty for all my shots. I'm itchin' for a nice digital SLR. Anyone want to buy me this camera?

Freethinker - think I will skip this dvd myself too. The bridge is indeed majestic and golden. Though with all due respect and objectivity, it is rather considerate for people to commit suicide from a bridge than a tall buildinga - less chance of hitting a happily alive person.

Glad to see you on my blog :-)

Hello there! Thank you for hopping onto my blog and reading my The Bridge review. I've thought about the movie a lot since viewing it, those images were just too haunting to forget.

Also, just to the poster above me -- supposedly, Eric Steel is not going to release this film on big screen...which I think translates it to not going on DVD thereafter. His reasoning is that he is not out to make money from this, and that he is just wanting to create awareness and push for a barrier. I hope he keeps his word.

I want to see this film but have a feeling it will not be availble here in the omaha area until it hits dvd.
I at more then one point in my life was on the verge of commiting suicide for reasons that dont matter here.
I have lost friends and reletives to suicide so I hope this does raise awareness to the seriousness of this issue and not be sweeped under the rug.

I saw the photo and instantly thought -- wooow! Amazing and absolutely beautiful. Then I read the post, FreeThinker, and I've got a funny and eerie feeling in my belly. I don't know what it is....It's not because I think it's 'wrong' that this guy has made a film about these people jumping off the bridge. I guess they had already made up their minds at the time and had no idea that their last seconds on this planet were to be part of a film. I just have this eerie feeling in my guts for some reason... Perhaps because, personally, I really treasure life. But I think it's a good thing if this film can help dealing with this 'taboo' and get people talking.....

Hey Free. I'm also in the market for a dSLR as well now. I gave my canon powershot to my kid cousin back in Jordan to keep since he was quite taken with photography. I'm looking at this slr to start.

I've always loved that bridge...and then I read your post. It is so sad...

And he should let it go on DVD and donate the proceeds to an organisation that offers help to depressed, potentially suicidal people as well as one that helps the families left behind of those that suceed. If there is a market for it? I can't imagine anyone wanting to see a movie like that more than once...if that.

It certainly is a subject that needs highlighting.

Just had to add...the first time I arrived at your blog I thought it was going to be about Bay Watch or 'your' singing career. You do know that in your profile pic you bear a striking resemblence to The Hoff?? :)

Every two weeks on average?! Well, if it keeps the fish happy... Seriously though, I guess that if you ae going to end it, there are few places as visually poetical than that bridge. I doubt the film would get shown over here, but I'd say that if it did give some genuine insight into why people choose there instead of somewhere else, it would be pretty intriguing. Ah, I'm fine without knowing really...

Yikes. I don't think I'll see it either.

Peace.

That is fascinating, if morbid.
