FreeThinker's 'Fro Flashback

Hello? Who is this? The barber? No, I'm still not coming in!That old 1978 photo of me wearing a John Lennon T-shirt in the Remembering John Lennon post inspired more comments about my old 'fro than about my Lennon T-shirt. So I dug out a few more photos from early 1979 when my 'fro was even bigger. This is an eighteen year old FreeThinker in Staten Island, New York. Dig the 'fro, of course, but also dig my first mustache, oversize sunglasses, Elton John T-shirt, Converse Chuck Taylor All Stars, and my 35mm camera bag!

These photos should prove that I was a Rocker, not a Disco boy. Disco music was all the rage at this time, and at least at my high school, you ran with the Disco crowd or you ran with the Rockers. We rockers wore our hair long and our clothes grungy, lest we be mistaken for a vacuous Tony Manero. The now-common colloquial adjective "sucks" entered the English vernacular at this time, born from the popular late-seventies slogan "Disco Sucks!" Disco died within the year and soon thereafter the 'fro was gone. And Rock and Roll lives on!

"6'5", 6'9" with the afro."

Once again quite the excellent 'fro my man. When I was a wee tyke I had the gold cheruby 'fro which kinda lost its power over time. Where's the jerry curl when I need it?

Eyes - Maybe you could call me "hair without a face?" No, no bugs were in my hair. It was always clean. But I could hide several small items in there -- it was my secret stash.

Fitz - Did I ever tell you about my Uncle Max?

Kenneth - Never, ever did what? Wear your hair long? Wear Chuck Taylors? Or you never, ever disco-danced like Tony Manero?

Radio - Ah yes, nice quote by Fletch. I could say "5'10", 6'2" with the afro. Never did the Jeri Curl thing.

Miz B - We get the 'fro n' friz picture from your profile photo! (Mine's a bit reddish but not as flaming as yours!)

Yorkie - Your Liverpudlian neighbors known as The Beatles started this long-hair hippie business when they invaded America in '64 with those moptops … say, looks like you still wear a '64 Beatles-style moptop! Yeah, yeah, yeah!

Miz B - Where would the world be now without the hippie scene and its San Francisco flashpoint at Haight/Ashbury circa 1967?

Nice 'fro, Dude. While I'm a tad younger than you (oh man! this feels like a near first, for sure!), I remember the lovely 70's hair all too well. When I was about 9 ('79), I talked my grandmother into giving me my first perm. My dad decided to get one, too. I have no idea why. I had really long hair - so it just ended up looking like a way-too-wide, fallen 'fro. My dad just looked retarded. hah. You carried the do off well, though. Cutie

That 'fro is impressive! Reminds me of when i was at Tin Pan Alley Festival last year, i met a guy with a huge afro and it blocked my view of the bands onstage... it was almost like something out of a cartoon or a comedy show... but luckily he was a nice guy and let me stand in front of him so i could see :)
